Philosophy

The Anti-Dealership Manual

Most repair guides give you procedures. This one gives you understanding. Every section starts with what you're experiencing — then walks you to the root cause.

01
Diagnose First

Every section opens with symptoms. What it sounds like. What it smells like. What the gauge is doing. Then the logical path to the actual cause.

02
Replace Second

People buy a $200 idle valve when it's a $5 vacuum hose. We tell you what to check before you spend anything.

03
Understand Always

You'll leave each section knowing why the system works, why it fails, and what to watch for next time. Not just what you did.

04
Verified Specs

Every torque figure, gap spec, and fluid recommendation is cross-referenced against factory data. Not forum guesses. Not approximations.

Mick's Word
to the Wise

Throughout the manual, Mick DeLane's callouts flag the things you only learn from owning one of these cars for decades — the traps, the shortcuts, the mistakes that cost people money.

The Fuel Line Trap

Check the short rubber sections at the rear subframe rail before condemning the pump. That's where they crack after 30 years.

The Slow Wiper Death

If the mono-wiper starts moving slowly, stop using it. Grease the rails ($2) before you strip the gear ($400).

Wrong Spark Plugs

Platinum or iridium plugs run poorly in these engines. Copper non-resistor only. Bosch H7DC or NGK BP6ES. Not negotiable.

"

Check the rubber first. Before you buy a new idle valve, a new injector, a new anything — check the rubber. Half the problems on these cars are a $5 vacuum hose under the air cleaner.
